The Challenge
Roger London wanted to transform an existing space into a fully functional room that could be used comfortably all year round. The existing structure was limited by a dated polycarbonate roof that offered poor thermal regulation.
Identifying the Problem
What was the existing condition of the structure/material?
The original polycarbonate roof and frames were thermally inefficient, making the room too cold in winter and too hot in summer.
What were the client's pain points or goals?
The client initially desired a Tapco tile roof conversion, but the existing structure could not achieve the required 14.5deg pitch. A creative, high-performance alternative was needed to meet building standards and the client's goals.
The Solution
Assessment:
Jordann and the team recommended an EPDM hand-cut warm roof construction. This allowed for a high-performance flat roof solution that met all insulation requirements while providing a sleek, modern profile.
Materials Used:
- Roofing: EPDM Rubber Membrane for its seamless, weather-proof longevity.
- Insulation: High-grade rigid PIR insulation and insulated plasterboard for maximum thermal retention.
- Feature: High-spec Roof Lantern to maximise natural light and add external "kerb appeal."
- Fenestration: New patio doors and redesigned frames for improved access and efficiency.
- Finish: Exterior Cladding added as a final design choice to unify the new structure with the home.
Implementation:
We stripped the old polycarbonate roof and frames, replacing them with a bespoke timber warm roof structure. After installing the EPDM membrane and the central roof lantern, the interior was fitted with insulated plasterboard and professionally plastered. To complete the aesthetic, we installed exterior cladding to tie the new elements together seamlessly.
