The Challenge

Identifying the Problem
What was the existing condition of the structure/material?
The affected section had a worn roof covering, deteriorated underlay and five roof windows that were no longer keeping out the weather reliably. Areas around the window openings and adjoining roof details were particularly vulnerable to leaks. Parts of the roofline had also reached the stage where replacement was the practical option.
What were the client's pain points or goals?
The immediate priority was to stop the leaks and protect the church interior from further water ingress. King’s Church also wanted to retain the natural daylight provided by the five roof windows and complete the agreed roofline work while the scaffolding was already in place.
The Solution
Assessment:
Our team surveyed the affected roof section and assessed the existing covering, underlay, battens, roof-window openings, flashing details and adjoining roofline. We recommended stripping and rebuilding the affected roof area, fitting five replacement VELUX roof windows with compatible flashing kits and renewing the agreed roofline components.
Materials Used:
- Roof covering: Grey roof tiles laid across renewed roof build-up.- Underlay and battens: New breathable roofing membrane and timber battens.- Roof windows: Five replacement VELUX roof windows.- Flashing: Compatible VELUX flashing kits integrated with the surrounding tiles.- Roof details: Renewed hip, ridge and abutment weathering details.- Roofline: Agreed replacement roofline components completed during the same scaffold period.

Implementation:
The existing roof covering and old roof windows were carefully removed to expose the underlying construction. After inspecting the roof structure, we installed the new breathable membrane and timber battens to create a secure base for the replacement covering.Five new VELUX roof windows were positioned within the roof and fitted with the appropriate flashing systems. The grey roof tiles were then laid around the windows, with the hip, ridge and abutment details completed to provide a neat and weather-resistant finish. The agreed roofline work was carried out while the scaffolding remained in place, allowing the different elements to be completed efficiently within the same programme.Result Focus:
The completed work has provided King’s Church Mildenhall with a renewed and coordinated roof section, five properly integrated roof windows and updated roofline components. The new build-up improves protection from the weather while retaining the natural daylight provided by the roof windows.Completing the re-roof, VELUX and roofline work together also avoided duplicated scaffolding costs and reduced future disruption. Following completion, Norfolk Exterior Solutions has provided the church with quotations for further potential improvement work.
